Pit Stop, Barcelona

I ended my Spain trip with a very short weekend in Barcelona in order to do some sightseeing and meet my colleague who was in town for a conference. Not only was the weather and the company great; I haven’t seen such a picturesque major city in a long time. The buildings and alleyways are all bold, beautiful, and eclectic, and much like Cairo, the place doesn’t seem to sleep (also much like Cairo, overall non-hijab related harassment levels are high, unfortunately).

My Spanish teacher always warned me wearing the headscarf in Spain would not go by smoothly and so I figured employing a shock-and-awe dressing strategy would be useful; my dramatic black and gold ensemble, with a traditional Afghan vest from Madeena Republic, and my go-to tutu skirt came to good use and also reflected the eccentric character of the city. Mission accomplished!

Leaving Granada

I knew I’d love Granada just based on its monuments and nature. I did not even imagine the Critical Muslim Studies program I attended would give anything near what it has provided in terms of ideas, friendships, and fun. Late night discussion sessions on the rooftop balcony and early intensive lectures took its toll; it was a sleepless 10-day period, but it was well worth losing sleep over. Really. I hope to be back next year with some of my favorite people from this year’s program (you know who you are ♥), as well as new, fresh faces if time allows it, iA.

Here are my last Granada outfits. I’ll wrap up the Spain OOTDs with a Barcelona post tomorrow. As with the last post this is done from my phone, and as such the picture quality and setup are different than usual. We shall be back to business as usual by the middle of the coming week.

Andalusian Adventures

First off; let me apologize for the lack of posts the last week. I’ve had some serious internet connection issues; the internet where i stay works for approximately an hour every day, and I prefer not to blog from my phone (first-world problems). I hoped to get my laptop connected in order to post some higher quality pictures, but since it is not happening you must bear with my phone cam pictures for now.

Al Andalus/Andalusia/Andalucia has been amazing, mA! Not only is the program I’m attending really interesting, sparking numerous after-session discussions among the participants; since the time I arrived I’ve had nonstop fun out-of-class as well.

(Just to make clear – I’m wearing beige baggy pants under this dress thingy)

We’ve bummed around Granada, visited the breathtakingly beautiful Alhambra, and had a nostalgic daytrip to Cordoba, once the greatest city in Europe, (nostalgic because as a Muslim one is constantly chased around by the security guards while visiting the grand mosque turned cathedral there).

Food is not always that great here, but to make up for it the ice cream is heavenly. I’m not exaggerating.

I have less than one week to go here in Spain, including this coming weekend’s visit to Barcelona, and as usual with my longer trips I’m really getting short on outfit options. Oh well. You’ll see more interesting stuff from me in not too long from now, iA.

The ’80s Glasses

This may or may not be the last post I write from Oslo this time around. I’m leaving Norway behind Sunday as I head to Granada, Spain, for what I anticipate to be a quite enriching scholarly program,  Dialogo Global’s Critical Muslim Studies: Decolonial Struggles, Theology of Liberation and Islamic Revival. The two-week trip shall be wrapped up with a weekend in Barcelona, insha’ Allah.

This is just going to be some gushing over finally getting to wear these insanely cool vintage ’80s sunglasses I snagged from my mother’s closet of treasures at the beginning of my stay. I felt cool. They would have been even better with a turban style, though, so I need to make sure that happens in Spain sometime. Otherwise my outfit is really chill: I was visiting a dear friend of mine outside the city and I needed something to lounge around in while still looking presentable. Jersey is the thing for such a purpose, and if you want to be just as comfortable as I was, you should head to H&M asap and grab this cheap baggy skirt with pockets. I’m loving it.

Spring Rose + El Pais Feature

All my Spanish-speaking readers should check out this article in the online version of El Pais (Spain’s largest newspaper) on hijab, fashion, and style blogging. I think I really liked what was written about The Hijablog, although I have several years ahead of me before I’ll be anywhere near professorship (In the text, they describe me as a professor although I’m still suffering through grad school). Other than that; here is the very simple, casual OOTD I was wearing yesterday with rose patterned awesome sales pants from Urban Outfitters. Spring must come soon. I really had enough of winter!
