Hijab & Saree

Many pakistani/indian muslims wearing hijab with their traditional clothing puzzle me. Most of the time I see them wear either convertable hijab, or a really tight tied, unflattering black hijab. But sometimes, this conservative black hijab is paired with short sleeves, don’t ask me why. Therefore I was happy to find this picture of two beautiful sisters sporting their hijabs in a elegant way!

*Update: I know this post offended some of you. I am sincerely sorry, as the idea of this post was not to generalize or point out that people have bad hijab or something. I just love the indian/pakistani traditional wear with all it’s colors and elegance, and was happy to find a picture where the girls matched the hijab to the outfit πŸ™‚

  1. Where do they get such lovely clothes??

  2. Ooops, I hit submit too quickly. Anyhoo, I was going to say, the cool thing about head scarves is that they go with EVERYTHING!! But then again, they have always been universal and found all over the world. When the French government denied citizenship to that lady for being in hijab because hijab is not “French” they seem to have totally forgotten about the fact that until recently, French women always covered their heads with their own version of hijab!! Just look at every statue of the Virgin Mary in France… Maybe they didn’t cover their faces but that’s no big deal. Who *needs* to see your face in order for you to be French or American or any other citizen of any country? It’s about privacy, not national identity!

I can tell you dont even know much about asians… we have the MOST beautiful girls and we definitely know how to carry off the hijab best… I mean i will report you for adressing to indian/pakistanis that way, its not about indian / pakistanis.. there are definitely others out there who wear headscarves and EXTRA tight clothes and short sleeves ( EXAMPLE : ARAB girls you see in central london) AND you dare say unflattering hijab? what do you know.. you probabily seen only few… ACTUALLY i can show you 101 pictures of asian girls with beautiful hijab style but my point here is if someone is wearing hijab.. wether it is plain black cloth, piece of old cloth just to cover the hair or simple.. THEY are covered therefore pleasing Alllah, NEVER EVER has it ever been said by the prophet S.A.W or in kitaabs / quraan that hijab must be worn in a particular way ( Beautiful style or swarozki crystles e.t.c) fair enough, It’s cool to style your hijab in whatever way you want buy DO NOT talk that way about any ethnicity in particular

  6. sameera says:

If you know only a few DO NOT generalise and say this and that puzzles you because its ridiculous to generalise that way… To be honest here in LONDON , majority of well covered women ( hijab and abaya) ARE all indian/ pakistani / banglaadeshi unlike the hypocritical gulf girls who peel it all off before getting down the plane whereas asians where it everywhere ( EAST OR WEST)
Its sad because ive been following your blog since the very start and all your posts amaze me, n i always think hhhmm how intresting or wow that beautiful and e.t.c but i saw this and i double checked if it was YOUR blog

Sameera, my best friend is pakistani. I know a lot of pakistani girls, and they are the sweetest (and also some of the most beautiful) muslim women out there. I don’t generalize, I know we arabs are sometimes the WORST when it comes to hijab…. I’ve seen arab girls with knee high boots and miniskirts sporting hijab. I think you misunderstood me. I hope you will continue reading, cuz I did not at all intend to talk bad about indians/pakistanis. Just sometimes I see beautiful indian/pakistani clothing topped up with the most unflattering hijabs; when they could easily sport the most elegant style using their traditional colorful clothing. Ps! I own 4 different shalwaar kameez and I love wearing it! I just saw this picture and I thought the girls worked the hijab in a beautiful way!!

  8. basbousa says:

Habayeb, I’m almost jelous, how I wish I had those clothes in that color!

  9. Sameera: how interesting. You tell Basbousa not to generalize about Asian hijabis… and then you go and trash Arab girls and “hypocritical gulf” Arab hijabis! You can’t have it both ways, you know.

  10. basbousa says:

It’s true somehow what Sameera says, we have hypocrites among arabs, but then also we have them among asians, africans, and americans too… The thing is, this thread was not originally meant like that, I hope everybody can understand that, and not be mad and such.

  11. sameera says:

Its jus generally i thought the word unflattering hijab isnt a nice word to use… The HIJAB is worn.. thats what Allah wants and thats all that matters, not how its styled nor elegance e.t.c… Back in the days.. such things didnt exsist and what about the poor women.. who hav only an old cloth
    Take care

  12. basbousa says:

Sameera, you are right. The best is to cover for Allah. But you Asian girls have so much potential with your beautiful clothing, matching the hijab would make the outfit soo much better.

  13. sameera says:

Dont need such advise thank you… as i always have to natch my hijab with ma bag/outfit.. I love the idea of colour cordinating and dif hijab styles
besides if you read my last post its nutin to do with asians

  14. basbousa says:

Sorry, Sameera. I was not trying to advice you, but I’m simply stating that asian girls have a lot of potential in theyr clothing πŸ™‚ And I’m sure your style is great πŸ™‚ I love it each time I see sisters sporting the hijab in an elegant way.. This makes non muslims more interested in hijab/muslim stuff..
Sameera, on a different note, are we “friends” again now?

  15. sameera says:

    Yes frriends!
If you dont mind me asking how old are you and where you from?

  16. basbousa says:

    Thanks πŸ˜€
I’m in my twenties, a mix between east and west.

  17. sayma says:

I think you’ve missed out Bangladeshi’s, we dress like like pakistanis and indians. Saree with hijabs is more of a traditional bangladeshi clothing when married.

  18. basbousa says:

Sayma, nice! Feel free to send me some photos if you have. I would love to post!

  19. Zeb Gul says:

I love to see pictures of women or muslimahs wearing sarees with their head scarfs on.

Can anyone please send me such pictures on my e-mail (s-danna@hotmail.com) or let me know some websites.

  20. girl in the pic :) says:

    Salam,

I don’t know whose blog this is but i’m the girl in the sari. I’m glad to see that people like this conservative style of wearing the sari because most desi’s believe that the beauty of the sari is taken away when worn like this. I was also wondering where you found this photo? A friend of mine sent me this link and i was quite surprised. Just concerned if there are other random pictures of me floating around the internet πŸ™‚

  21. basbousa says:

Masha’a Allah, then you are very beautiful!!!! I found the photo on a blog, but I don’t remember which one, sorry. I think it had to do with indian and pakistani clothing…

  22. amreen says:

they’re my cousins!!! And yes they are beautiful inside and out!

  23. Tuba says:

Argh! I can’t see the picture! :@ Btw, I once went to a family wedding and saw trwo of my cousins (twins) wearing a sari with the long bit (I think it’s called a pallu?) over their heads. They looked BEAUTIFUL. But they had short sleeves, their neck was showing and the sari was pretty clingy πŸ™‚

  24. Sana says:

Hey, I’m Pakistani. Sameera, TAKE A CHILL PILL. The author just pointed something out, and frankly, she’s one hundred and 10% correct.

Most Asians are just after fashion, (my whole community is Asian, so I, quite frankly, would know) and they do indeed wear short sleeves. And the ‘dupatta’ isn’t a substitute for hijab, and the ‘dupatta’ is free flowing, shows the neck, the hair and more. The salwar kameez used to be a modest item of clothing, but now is skin tight.
Some women wear hijabs, then use the dupatta to cover their chest with a safety pin. That’s what I do, and it means I am fully covered.

Sameera, you acted hypocritical, claiming we have the most beautiful women. FYI, as a Muslim, facial beauty shouldn’t have to be your top priority, piety should be though.

  25. RAJESH says:

    SO BEAUTIFUL………….

  26. Assalam all
am from India, to be 21 inshaAllah this 28th..and InshaAllah goin to start wearin the hijab from my bday…
i hav been searching the net all day lukin for good drape styles, but, all i found were styles that dont really go with Indian clothing…
i wud request all of you to help me find some good ways to wrap the hijab…

well, i like the saree gal, but i think the gal in purple shud have covered her chest better…
i’m goin to pin my dupatta on the shoulder and then wear a headscarf… in this way everythings gonna be covered…. but, i dont have to spend a lot in order to get full sleeved kameez and kurtis… (like sana said above)

yupss, i too agree that there are many who wear their kameez really tite and short sleevd.. it really luks stupid.. esp. some gals who wear saree like the models.. you know.. showing their belly, back… but with a little piece of cloth on their head… uuuggghhh!!!! horrible….

but, i think sameera is rite in saying that hijab need not be flattering… i, myself wont be wearing printed hijabs, or even colored ones…. i’ll stik to blak wid a little bit of stone work at the back..
i think indians prefer it this way coz.. our clothes are already sooooooo colorful and bright…. if we go for matching hijabs.. we’ll luk like clowns.. :p ….. and it’ll appear too gaudy…. well, at least.. in my case.. thats the reason for stikin to black…a nice salwwar-kameez, pinned dupatta and blak mufta… it looks sober, smart and professional… πŸ™‚

    love always.
    Almas

β€œAnd say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear therof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, or their brothers’ sons or their sisters’ sons, or their women or the servants whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex, and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O you Believers, turn you all together towards Allah, that you may attain Bliss.” (Quran 24:31).

thanks for your pic.. its motivating me.

    wassalam..

  33. marzan ferdousi says:

looking good but not so smart. if you weared a gorgiou scarf with this sharee, it will be much more prettier than this dress. and that salwar kamij is not so good & your hijab don’t maintain a proper hijab. it’s ok, better luck both of you on next time.

  34. s.tareen says:

i think the hijab must be simple.

  35. s.tareen says:

my comment is same as above.

  36. RK says:

You should look on Youtube – search Amenakin she shows how to wear the hijab in different styles. I like the fact that there are so many versatile ways of wearing the hijab without showing skin.
